Why pike? I can’t count the number of times that question has been put to me. There are several reasons why I choose pike as my preferred gamefish. I love a pike’s aggressive nature and its willingness to attack. I love the challenge that catching a true trophy presents. And the wilderness settings in which pike reside are very close to my heart.
What about you, the reader of this book? Maybe you are a bass or walleye angler looking to catch something that could eat most of the fish you normally catch. You could be someone who works hard and wants to learn how to make the most out of your free time. Or perhaps you want to take the family on a vacation and have those kids catch fish until their arms are sore. Or take your wife to a special hideaway and have her experience firsthand what makes you a fish nut. Whatever your reason, pike are a great candidate to fulfill it, and I hope that I can help make your efforts successful.
My intent in writing this book is to help you learn how to catch more and bigger northern pike, by sharing what I have learned over the past thirty-plus years. As you read through the book, I will take you through the entire season, from ice-out through the freeze-up, and explain where to fish, what to use, and how to use it. I’ll show you different techniques and tricks I’ve learned over the last three decades. I’ll show you how to make better leaders than you can buy – and that will cost you less – and how to modify certain lures to make them more effective. And I will explain the importance of catch-and-release fishing and how to successfully complete this process.
Fishermen and women have different thoughts on what makes a successful outing on the water. Some enjoy just catching a lot of fish. Others are content to work hard for just one big fish. There is no right or wrong in all this; it is a matter of personal preference. As for me, I just like catching pike and consider the trip successful when I do. In this book, I will attempt to help everyone make their outings more successful. I will point you to locations that are high-percentage spots for trophy-sized pike. In fishing most of these big-fish locations, you will no doubt rack up some numbers at the same time, although a couple of them will be exclusively big fish spots. In pike fishing, it is normal to weed through smaller and mid-sized fish to catch big ones.
